Old Fashioned Lemonade

Hi! I’m Rachel, and my blog is Family Ever After.

I am a country girl at heart… my 4 sisters and I grew up in South Dakota. I’ve know my husband since we were 12, he grew up there too! I went to college at BYU, where I learned how to sew, and majored in Family and Consumer Science Education. Right out of college, I taught middle school sewing for one year. I’m now living my dream being a mom to three kids. I’m very passionate about letting them “help” me do projects. Basically, my blog is a big mish mash of things I love: sewing, crafting, food, family, travel, gardening, running, and taking pictures of it all!

Feel free to stop by and “join the family!”

Old Fashioned Lemonade from Family Ever After via www.thirtyhandmadedays.com
Now that summer is finally here, my kids have been begging me to do all sorts of things with them (and I’m loving it). One of the things they wanted to do is make lemonade. So we did.

I wanted to try out an old fashioned recipe, using freshly squeezed lemons.

The first thing I had the kids to is a little trick I learned from Rachael Ray. We rolled our lemons around on the counter. Supposedly, that revs up the flavors.

Then we washed all the lemons (I’m a big fan of “Fit).

*A little tip: Don’t attempt to make homemade, fresh squeezed lemonade without a juicer. Your fingers will sting for days afterward! I hand sqeezed each of these lemons. The next day, I went to Target and bought a juicer for only a couple of dollars. For Pete’s Sake!

That was a lot of painful work, but definitely worth it!

The trick is to make a simply syrup, to dissolve the sugar into the water. Then you mix the water and fresh squeezed lemon juice together. Ahhh, so refreshing!

Recipe type: Drink
Serves: 2 pitchers
Ingredients
  • Simple Syrup: 2¼ cups white sugar + 3 cups water
  • 3 cups lemon juice (6 lemons= appx. 1 cup lemon juice)
  • 10+ cups cold water (to dilute)
Instructions
  1. Make a simple syrup by heating the sugar and water in a small saucepan on med/low heat until the sugar is dissolved completely.
  2. While the sugar is dissolving, roll, wash, and juice the lemons.
  3. Add the simple syrup and lemon juice to a pitcher. Add the cold water, to your desired strength and taste. If the lemonade is a little sweet for your taste, add
  4. a little more straight lemon juice to it, and vice versa.
  5. Refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  6. Serve with ice, sliced lemons, and a small splash of sugar (I like the texture it brings).

*yields appx. 2 pitchers full

Hi- I'm Mique (as in Mickey). I started 30days as an idea file a few years ago. After three years and hundreds of ideas, I now realize that I'll never check them all off my list. When I'm not creating, I love spending time with family and friends and long drives, especially if they end at the beach.

Yum! I made some lemonade last week without really following a recipe. It never turns out quite right, so I’m glad to have found this today AND to still have a few lemons left over. Thanks for sharing!

    I stopped by from Ruthie’s.

I always visit a lemon site just because. I always keep a jar of simple syrup in my fridge. You never know when you need some lemonade or tea.
