Summertime Pool Organizer

Hello! I’m Sumo, and I blog over at Sumo’s Sweet Stuff.
My mom spent my childhood trying to convince me that I wanted to learn how to sew, but I didn’t get smart and agree with her until about three years ago. I’m mostly self taught, and absolutely love sewing. It’s definitely my favorite creative outlet. I’d take fabric shopping over shoe shopping any day of the week, even if for nothing else but to see it sitting prettily on my shelf. I have three darling little girls that I love creating and sewing for; I can’t seem to stay caught up on my projects for them because I see new ideas of things I want to make all the time. You’ll find a little bit of crafting, and a whole lot of sewing over at Sumo’s Sweet Stuff. Some of my favorite projects are my ruffled t-shirt dress, bustle skirt, and cascading ruffle tank. What can I say, with three girls, we’ve got a thing for ruffles over here!
Summertime can be super fun! I know that we are always spending lots of time outside; sprinklers, water park, splash pads, pools – and with the heat we’ve been getting here in Utah, I imagine there is a lot more of that in our future.
But what to do with all of your extra things while you’re hanging at one of these places? Phones shouldn’t be sitting in the sun too long, you don’t want your books and magazines to get wet. Here’s the perfect solution: a pool chair organizer!

Seriously easy to make, and you’ll be glad to have this!
Here’s what you need to get started:
- terry cloth material (or something absorbent) – I got 1.5 yards and was able to make two
- ribbon
- sewing supplies/machine

I got some measurements from my parent’s pool chairs when I was visiting them last month, and I imagine they are fairly standard. But if you can measure your own, even better! From the ground to the pool chair was about 10”. We are going to be folding the fabric up to create the pockets, so you’ll need double your measurement – mine was 20”. Mark that with a pin on your fabric.

Now place that mark at the beginning of your cutting mat.

My next measurement was the width of the pool chair: 22.5”. Mark this.

Then measure another 20” from this pin (this is the other side that will hang over on the other side of the chair) and cut.

Now go ahead and take a minute to finish all of your edges; you can do this with a zig zag stitch or a serger. Terry cloth frays terribly and you don’t want to be messing with that!

Now take the ribbon, and measure off pieces along each of your short ends. Pin and sew in place. Make sure you sew the ribbon on the same side (front or back) or your fabric!

Now fold up the ribbon side, marking ten inches with a pin.

Fold under about 1/4” and sew all along the long edge. Repeat on the opposite side, making sure you fold up your pockets at each end.

Now measure across the pocket, and mark off where you want to sew the lines to create the pockets. This is totally personal preference!

Sew straight lines up to the ribbon to create the pockets.

That’s it! Told ya it was easy! Now you’ve got a cute and functional pool chair organizer for all of your summer fun!

Don’t worry if you don’t have access to your own community pool; these babies roll up nicely and will fit in your pool bag just great for use at the water parks and splash pads.!

Hi- I'm Mique (as in Mickey). I started 30days as an idea file a few years ago. After three years and hundreds of ideas, I now realize that I'll never check them all off my list. When I'm not creating, I love spending time with family and friends and long drives, especially if they end at the beach.
