Since it’s summer, you’ll likely have family or friends from out of town come to visit you. You need a place for them to stay. You might be like me and don’t have a guest room, do you? So, what’s the next best thing? Our company uses one of our kids’ bedrooms. It may or may not be difficult, but you can pull off a guest room in 30 minutes or less with these tips I’ve got for you:
- Declutter – This is the big part in a kid’s room! You’ll have to seriously declutter. Unfortunately, you won’t have time to really sort through things, so you may just have to opt for the laundry basket and toss in things that are laying around and clean up all the stuff on the floor. But, you can do it quickly if you just dig in! I don’t normally recommend decluttering this way, but when company comes you need to get stuff out. Get out the things your child will need for the time your guests are there – like toys or clothing – and put in a basket or box near where they will be sleeping for that time, too.
- Hanging space and/or drawer – After you clear the clutter, make sure you clear out a drawer or two and/or a place for your guests to hang their things. If you are moving out one of your kids, it will be necessary to move out some of their clothing anyway so just make a couple of drawers for your guests so they feel welcome.
- Clear the nightstand – if there is a nightstand, clear it off and set out just a clock, a lamp, and maybe some flowers on there. If there isn’t one, find something like a TV tray to make into a small nightstand for your guests.
- Amenities – It’s so nice to have a few amenities in their room. First of all, giving them a private room is especially kind and hospitable. So, go a step further and have extra toiletries, bottled water, and maybe some magazines for them to have when they had off to their rooms for the evening.
- Luggage Rack – not all of us have a luggage rack. I actually have one I bought at a thrift store for just $5, but make something INTO a luggage rack like the top of a toy box or chair.
It’s not always easy adjusting to adding several people to your home, but planning ahead and decluttering where necessary can really help your guests feel more welcomed into your home! I’ve got lots more ways to help you get organized when company comes and when you entertain this summer. And, as usual, if you want more organizing inspiration, join me at Organizing Made Fun.
