Hi, I’m Vanessa from Tried & True and I’m so excited to be taking part in Mique’s Funner In The Summer! I love making crafts with my kids and summertime is the perfect opportunity to get our hands dirty with glue and paint. These Patriotic Straw Coasters are super easy to make for even the smallest of hands with very little frustration or worry. My 6 year old made a flag pattern but feel free to let your children choose their own designs. They’ll be so proud of their little creations!
As you can see in the image above, I left the raw straw edges but if that bother’s you, feel free to glue trimmed popsicle sticks to hide them. My kids got a kick out of knowing they made coasters out of straws and loved looking through the exposed sides! (This post contains affiliate links)
Patriotic Straw Coasters
- Paper Straws (I used Blue/White Stars and Red/White Stripes)
- Aleene’s® Original Tacky Glue
- Blank Coasters
Step One. Assemble your supplies. Use the straws mentioned in the materials list if you want to make the identical coasters or grab a bunch of various colors and styles and let the kids design their own!
I love how customizable these are! You could make some of these for any holiday or for a birthday gift. We’re giving these to my dad in a gift basket for Father’s Day with some root beer and snacks. He’s going to love that his grandchildren made them!
If you’re worried about the coasters’ longevity, you can always seal the straws with a bit of Mod Podge Hardcoat to prevent water damage. Considering these straws are meant to be submerged in liquid, I think you’ll be ok if you decide to forgo the sealant. Hope you and your family enjoy making your own coasters!
