This “It’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice” printable is the perfect print to hang in your home and have discussions with your kids! My friend Kristen from Capturing Joy is here to talk all about this for Funner in the Summer —
It seems like most parents emphasize to choose kindness to their children, but maybe they don’t necessarily expound on “be kind” and what it means in various situations. Sometimes, kids (and even some adults) need it broken down, and I’m here to do just that today.
I’m delighted to share a printable today that you can hang in your home, “It’s nice to be important but it’s more important to be nice.” I’ve loved this quote for as long as I can remember, and years ago I made a painted vinyl board to hang up in my home with the sentiment on it. I wanted my kids to know that kindness was and always is above popularity.
In the past year or so, I’ve been on a kick of creating cute quote designs with accompanying coloring pages with the intent of kids hanging them on their bathroom mirror or framed in their bedroom to look at every day. I’m here to share them with you today! The colorful version is more “girly” but the black and white version can be colored to any shades you like.
Hi there 30 Days friends…I’m Kristen Duke! I’m delighted to be a guest here today, I normally share all my family fun goodness over on my site, Capturing Joy.
I started my blogging journey as a photographer sharing photo tips, and it’s since morphed into a lifestyle family fun site where I aim to share ways to bring families closer together. I’d love to have you join me over there! You can start by subscribing to my newsletter and I’ll send you my free e-book: 10 intentional Ways to bring your family closer together.
Now, back to the quote on choosing kindness. I believe that as our children stare at uplifting quotes, it sinks into their brains, and hopefully turns into action.
I wanted to share a discussion I had with my children at our family night (which happens every Monday, we rotate taking turns sharing a lesson on important topics). I also shared this with the class I teach when I saw unkindness that made me sad. Hopefully this is something you can use as an uplifting message in your home as well!
When do people feel important?
When they get an award. When someone pays them a compliment.
People also feel important when others laugh at their jokes…it feels pretty important to be funny.
However, sometimes people feel important when they make fun of someone else and people laugh at that joke. Sometimes they say “just joking” after…sometimes they don’t. Sometimes, they may not even realize that what they are doing is unkind.
{I’d love to start a movement to stop using the phrase “just joking” because it almost always comes after an unkind statement that is hurtful at the core. Think about it.}
What is bullying to you?!?!
Both of my daughters had instances in elementary school where they had friends that claimed, “I won’t be your best friend if…” whether it was to play this game, or walk away from this person.
I had to teach them that that is bullying too. It surprised them, because friends aren’t supposed to be bullies.
It seems most kids think of bullying as pointing and laughing and ridiculing outright. Bullies come in all shapes and sizes, and often disguised as friends. In my opinion, they do what they do because they have something sad in their life that is propelling them to act that way.
Now, for the prints! I’m sharing the color version here, and you can hop on over to my site to download the coloring page black and white version!
