Funner in the Summer with Simply Modern Mom: Sand Play Dough Recipe

I am excited to be here on 30 Days with Mique. Been a big fan of hers for a long time. Last year I was here for Funner in the Summer with the corn hole toss. This year I thought I would do something more beach-y. We have been having a busy summer including a week-long beach vacation in North Carolina and a family reunion with my husband’s family. And now that all our trips are over with, we are getting ready for school to start in two weeks and baby #3 coming in 5 weeks. Ahhh! When we were on our beach vacation, I brought home bags of sand because I wanted to make sand play dough. I researched play dough recipes and come up with this one for sand play dough. I thought it would be fun to have the children bring home a part of the beach. This way they were able to build sand castles at home. It kept little hands busy all summer long.

Sand Play Dough Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup clean sand (can be store bought)
  • 1 tablespoon cream of tartar
  • 1 1/2 tablespoon of cooking oil
  • 1 cup of flour + 1/4 cup of all-purpose bleached flour
  • 1/2 cup boiling water

1. In a large mixing bowl, combine sand, cream of tartar, cooking oil and the 1 cup of flour. Mix well.

2. Dump the boiling water all at once into the mixture and stir until the mixture forms a ball. Mix well. Use your hand to kneed it if necessary.

3. Add the last 1/4 cup of flour to the mixture to get the right consistency. Kneed it in well. If it is too dry, add a little bit more water. If it is too runny, add more flour. Store in air tight containers.

Note: If you use sand from the beach, I would be cautious and watch for children putting the play dough in their mouths. And not knowing what is in the beach sand, it may mold after a few days. Thanks for having me! Happy summer! Tiffany {Simply Modern Mom}

Thanks for sharing this Tiffany! I love this idea. You always have such great projects and ideas. I appreciate you sharing them here!  This one is perfect for a beach loving mama like me. I can’t wait to make this with my kids!

Mique
Hi- I'm Mique (as in Mickey). I started 30days as an idea file a few years ago. After three years and hundreds of ideas, I now realize that I'll never check them all off my list. When I'm not creating, I love spending time with family and friends and long drives, especially if they end at the beach.
